Good news: most of the lost marks come from two fixable things — word partnerships (collocations) and a few grammar patterns. Nail those and your score jumps fast. Some answers on the paper were blank or hard to read; those just say “left blank.”

🎯 Your game plan

4 moves that fix most of this

Do these and the next test feels way easier — promise.

  1. Learn words in pairs, not solo. Most Part 1 slips were word-partners: corners of the globe, off the beaten track, engrossed in, a link between. When you meet a new word, note the words that hang out with it.
  2. Spy the little word after the gap. engrossed in vs captivated by; collide with. That tiny preposition is often a free clue to the answer.
  3. Practise the “fancy grammar” patterns. Inversion (Never have so many… / so did their children), reduced passives (Completed in 1981…), and Unless vs Provided that. You already aced Q30 inversion — same energy on the rest.
  4. Finish the paper — every box. Loads of Reading marks were just blank. Always guess if unsure. And the essay was ~50 words of 240–280 — practise a simple 4-paragraph plan with a timer and you'll get there.
